Measure Words (量词)
In Chinese, you can't just say "two cats" or "three books." You must use a specific "measure word" between the number and the noun.
The Core Formula
三个苹果 (sān gè píngguǒ)
Three apples
三苹果
Missing the measure word!
个 (gè) — The "Universal" Measure Word
If you forget the specific measure word for an object, you can almost always use 个 (gè). Native speakers use it constantly as a fallback.
For people:
两个人 (liǎng gè rén)
Two people
For abstract concepts:
一个问题 (yí gè wèntí)
One question
warningWhen NOT to use 个
Do not use 个 if the noun is already a measurement of time or currency. For example, 天 (day), 年 (year), and 块 (yuan) act as their own measure words.
✅ 三天 (three days) ❌ 三个月天
